Between 29th April and 8th May 2011, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway held a massive 10 day gala to celebrate 175 years since the Whitby -- Pickering line was opened. The theme of the gala was how the line has changed over the 175 years and this was very much highlighted in the choice of motive power over the 10 day period which spanned from 'Rocket' to BR's last standard gauge passenger locomotive 71000 'Duke of Gloucester'.

The full list of advertised steam locomotives appearing were:
|BR 8P 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' (from 71000 Trust -- first visit since 2008)*
|BR 4MT-T 80072 (from Llangollen Railway)**
|BR 9F 92214 'Cock O' The North' (Recently Named)*
|BR 4MT 76079 (running as 76084)**
|LMS 'Black 5' 44767 'George Stephenson' (Returned to NYMR recently)*
|LMS 'Black 5' 45407 'Lancashire Fusilier' (from Ian Riley)*
|LMS 'Black 5' 45428 'Eric Treacy'***
|LMS 'Black 5' 45212 (On long term loan from KWVR)**
|LMS 'Black 5' 44871 (from Ian Riley) ***
|Replica 'Rocket' (from NRM)*
|Replica 'Planet' (from MoSI)*
|LNER A4 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' (first gala appearance since 2009)*

Also operating at some point over the gala was SR 825 and some diesels (but not on 7/5/11). Although advertised to be running, LNWR 49295 hasn't run over any of the gala days due to regulator problems and Q6 63395 was out of traffic due to reverser problems. On a happier note, the gala marked the return to traffic of GWR 56xx 6619 which has been out of action for a year.

The day got of to a bad start, I ended up missing the train I wanted by 5 minutes (even though we set off in plenty of time) and this pretty much threw my entire plans out of the window! This is the reason why some of the shorts seem rushed and without a tripod (in fact I only used it once but that shot isn't even worth uploading!). The weather wasn't good either! The sun hid behind thick rail clouds throughout most of the day, there were a few light rain showers but out of the cold breeze it warm! Despite the set-backs and the weather, I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit back to the NYMR since last years spring steam gala and thought that the entire experience of the day was excellent! My extended gratitude goes to everyone at the NYMR for taking on the huge logistical task of organising a gala such as this and to all the visiting locomotive owners for allowing their engines to appear.

Shots are:
60007 arrives at Pickering
71000 couples to the train
'Rocket' departs for one of the short distance shuttles
44767 'George Stephenson' shunts at Grosmont
Shed Scenes at Grosmont
45407/44767 passes Grosmont sheds with a train for Pickering
Passing 6619 at Goathland
71000 arrives at Levisham (with 'Planet', 92214 and 44767)
Passing 44767 departing Levisham (with some EPIC whistling!)
'Rocket' passes road crossing outside Pickering
45407 passes Trout Farm Crossing, Pickering

Soon I will be uploading a Highlights video that will include new shots of 71000 working over the line this year and pictures from her visit in 2008.

Thanks for watching!
