Psychiatry Drugs Foster Care Children - Ashley
I took my video camera to a Foster Care Alumni meeting and asked seven foster kids to tell me about there experiences in Child Protective Services while wards of the state.
One thing they all had in common was massive over drugging with psychiatric drugs.
Child placement agencies, foster parents, RTCs (Residential Treatment Centers) and Therapeutic Foster Homes get paid a certain amount of money each day for taking care of a foster child. The amount of money they get paid depends on a level of care system. The more difficult the child or the more problems that child has, the more money you get.
A child at the basic level of care is worth about 17 dollars a day where as a child in the highest level of care could be worth as much as a 1000 dollars a day. This puts the incentive on diagnosing children with behavior problems to justify raising their level of care. A child on psychiatric drugs is worth more than a child without problems.
It is not uncommon for a foster child to be placed on many different psychotropic drugs at the same time. Some investigations have found children on as many as 13 mind altering drugs prescribed by a psychiatrists at one time.
These drugs include all categories of psychiatric drugs; antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anxiety medications, anticonvulsants medications, etc.
The SSRI drugs are commons such as Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, etc. Also a number of these children described taking Risperdal, Zyprexa, Geodon and other new generation antipsychotics which have been linked to weight gain, obesity and diabetes.

OMG these are the saddest stories I have ever heard.
Maybe when my kids grow up and move out I will be a foster parent. Even if I was only able to give one child love and an education I think it would be worth it.
i see what you mean. it is really bad that it can happen. i want to help and i think its in a way that i can help. I am not doing it for themoney and i cant because i have kids of myown and i cant get a "problem" child i just want to help the child. i am trying to help and i dont want to be looked down on for soing so. what about the kids who really do need help? if i dont do it who will? alot of kids being hurt and what if they had no one? thanks for your time
i really want to know what you think cause i am worried about becoming a foster mom cause i dont want to get to attached to the child. but i do want to help. i have been looking at videos today about it and all i see is the neg. have seen any good comeing out of the system? thanks for your time and i am really sorry about your child hood i could not imagine what that might have been like, cant wait to hear from you
I honestly think the system does more harm than good.
That's not to say there isn't a need for a the system. Children should be protected from abuse but they should actually be protected, not just moved around and forced to undergo further abuse.
If you become a foster care parent out of an honest desire to help, I'm sure you will be a good parent.
If your doing it for the money, they system is set up so that the worse off the child, the more money the system pays.
You silly silly woman why would you even bother getting involved if you dont want any attachment to the child, a child is not like a stray dog that follows you home and you dont want to get attatched, but a human who needs attatchment and a sense of belonging. Get a dog and by the way dont have your own children you nitwit.
This cannot continue. I was taken away from my parents for truancy before I turned 11, because I have social anxiety so I skipped school. From then until I was 17, I was in the system, in and out of group homes. Whenever foster care was mentioned to me, I objected, and stayed at the same group home from age 14 til 17. They seem to have better oversight and regulations, but I've heard horrible foster home stories. This system is so corrupt. YOU are responsible for your kids, NOT the gov.
What a beautiful child! Thats sickening how much she's been messed about by a system that proclaims to care about the rights of kids. We are just pawns in their power game.I've had them on my case nearly my whole life and they are full of crap. I hope Ashley has a decent life ahead.
Another important issue to remember is that these same people who treat you as lab rats and foster for money are the same ones that help the social workers from DHS/CPS make you believe that your real parents disowned you. Many parents who were coerced into giving up their rights are still fighting for their children, and the children are constantly being told that their real parents don't want to have anything to do with them. The whole system is a lie.
