Psychiatry Drugs Foster Care Children - Ashley

I took my video camera to a Foster Care Alumni meeting and asked seven foster kids to tell me about there experiences in Child Protective Services while wards of the state.

One thing they all had in common was massive over drugging with psychiatric drugs.

Child placement agencies, foster parents, RTCs (Residential Treatment Centers) and Therapeutic Foster Homes get paid a certain amount of money each day for taking care of a foster child. The amount of money they get paid depends on a level of care system. The more difficult the child or the more problems that child has, the more money you get.

A child at the basic level of care is worth about 17 dollars a day where as a child in the highest level of care could be worth as much as a 1000 dollars a day. This puts the incentive on diagnosing children with behavior problems to justify raising their level of care. A child on psychiatric drugs is worth more than a child without problems.

It is not uncommon for a foster child to be placed on many different psychotropic drugs at the same time. Some investigations have found children on as many as 13 mind altering drugs prescribed by a psychiatrists at one time.

These drugs include all categories of psychiatric drugs; antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anxiety medications, anticonvulsants medications, etc.

The SSRI drugs are commons such as Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, etc. Also a number of these children described taking Risperdal, Zyprexa, Geodon and other new generation antipsychotics which have been linked to weight gain, obesity and diabetes.

  • i really want to know what you think cause i am worried about becoming a foster mom cause i dont want to get to attached to the child. but i do want to help. i have been looking at videos today about it and all i see is the neg. have seen any good comeing out of the system? thanks for your time and i am really sorry about your child hood i could not imagine what that might have been like, cant wait to hear from you

  • I honestly think the system does more harm than good.

That's not to say there isn't a need for a the system. Children should be protected from abuse but they should actually be protected, not just moved around and forced to undergo further abuse.

If you become a foster care parent out of an honest desire to help, I'm sure you will be a good parent.

If your doing it for the money, they system is set up so that the worse off the child, the more money the system pays.

  • OMG these are the saddest stories I have ever heard.

Maybe when my kids grow up and move out I will be a foster parent.

Even if I was only able to give one child love and an education I think it

    would be worth it.

  • What a beautiful child! Thats sickening how much she's been messed about by a system that proclaims to care about the rights of kids. We are just pawns in their power game.I've had them on my case nearly my whole life and they are full of crap. I hope Ashley has a decent life ahead.

  • Please type in Ban Paxil using your google search engine and sign the petition if you believe that Paxil is a bad drug

  • Like the people who run foster care

  • People in foster care are fucked up why would you do that to someone

  • This is really sad. I feel bad that girl had to go through all of that. Those of you who have a problem similar with the school issue, you should look at K12.com. I am currently enrolled in the online school. I love the curriculum and the teachers help you with anything you need! It is completely free and it only costs to ship the materials back to the school. Children should not have to be in an enviroment like that. Especially not this girl!

  • YOU sweet beautiful girl....I am so glad you are so very brave and not having to deal with this anymore.

  • See...just like I said. They are using these kids as lab rats and to line their pockets.

  • Hi Ashley! I loved hearing your story. I think you are brave and a very strong and interesting person. (I am a Mum living France.) I wish you good luck. Also, you are not "partly to blame" for enjoying the attention of that foster father, and I mean it even if you flirted back! He was being irresponsible and knew he was doing wrong. You were a child so just accept what the law says about that and believe that you were blameless. Children should be protected not exploited.
