President Richard Nixon talks with his white house counsel, Charles Colson, about the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the 1972 presidential election. At the time of the conversation, Henry Kissinger had recently announced that peace was at hand in Vietnam. The two men discuss the impact of this announcement and the brewing Watergate scandal on the country and the upcoming election against George McGovern. Nixon, who went on to win in a landslide victory, notes that "the election was over long before" Kissinger's announcement. Nixon contends that press accusations against his chief of staff Bob Haldeman about his involvement in the Watergate scandal were "all lies."
