I think the major problem with this is the pedaling. There's a huge (to the ear) gap between the phrases where the pedal is lifted.
Play a C Major scale lagato with just an index finger and the pedal. Be mindful of gaps between notes or discord. If all through the scale there aren't any gaps or sounds of multiple notes, the pedaling is being done correctly. Then apply to this piece. I'd like to hear how it turns out.
