George Balanchine was one of the worlds great choreographers. From Diaghilevs Ballet Russe, he went on to co-found the School of American Ballet and lead the New York City Ballet.

A Midsummer Nights Dream was his favourite theatre piece. He created the ballet in 1962, having spent 20 years searching for music to expand Mendelssohns original score to a suitable length.

Francia Russell, Pacific Northwest Ballets Artistic Director, has restored the original ballet to take account of Balanchines known intentions.

Set and costume designer Martin Pakledinaz makes stunning use of a subtly graded colour palette, richly reflected by the latest in high-definition technology.
