Lord Monckton, the third Viscount of Brenchley, is something of a vanishing species. There used to be many like him in Britain: slightly eccentric in the best possible way, good-hearted, intellectually focused, and above all, unassailably independent-minded.

It would be nice to think that in the near future, perhaps the inhabitants of this world will no longer need an Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, or any other elaborately charismatic charlatan, to create a false reality for them.

They will not need a self-aggrandising Elmer Gantryesque character on whose every word they can hang. They will be happy to respect those men and women, whomever they may be, who simply tell the truth.
