New Riders of the Purple Sage - Hello Mary Lou 1972
Original by Ricky Nelson 1961

Hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou, I'm so in love with you
I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

You passed me by one sunny day
Flashed those big brown eyes my way
And oo I wanted you forever more
I'm not one that gets around
Swear my feet stuck to the ground
And though I never did meet you before

I said, hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou, I'm so in love with you
I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

I saw your lips I heard your voice
Believe me I just had no choice
Wild horses couldn't make me stay away
I thought about a moonlight night
My arms about good an' tight
That's all I had to see for me to say

Hey, hey, hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou, I'm so in love with you
I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

(Instrumental)

You passed me by one sunny day
Flashed those big brown eyes my way
And oo I wanted you forever more
I'm not one that gets around
Swear my feet stuck to the ground
And though I never did meet you before

I said, hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou, I'm so in love with you
I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

Yeh hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart
Yeh hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart

  • What I like about this version is how it brings out some of the urgency and joy of new love by upping the tempo, syncopating the lyrics, adding the lap-steel guitar, and throwing in the repeat of the first verse, with a slightly more ecstatic delivery, all while keeping the signposts of the original, the cowbell, the electric guitar riff, and the harmony.

  • I've been a NRPS fan for 35+ years - and never once have I been able to listen to them w/out tapping my feet. Buddy Cage is amazing. cheers to them for all the years of musical happiness they brought to me.

  • Pedal Steel sweet sound. Thanks Buddy Cage :-)

Tempo of this cover song fun.

  • The New Riders of the Purple Sage with Special Guest Donna Jean Godchaux will be playing Island in the Mountains Fest on Blannahassett Island in Marshall , NC on 08-01-2011.

Google Island in the Mountains Fest and come join us on the island.

  • I like it!!!!

  • @captainzorikh A very sharp take on what makes this version such a joy to listen to.

Too many people who barely know the New Riders just think of them as fun loving apostles of grass. But they had a feel for country and country music and their music has aged very well.
