It's not that bad, I wouldn't even go as far as to call them awkward. The devs did a pretty good job at making the controls intuitive and responsive. It's leaps and bounds better than most action games I've played on the phone.
Also, I don't think it's the next state of the art in portable gaming per se; it's just an interesting alternative to the PSP/DS paradigm.
