Jimmy Webb sat on the beach in Galveston. His thoughts went to the Spanish American war of 1898, 2 years before the Great Storm of 1900, and worst natural disaster in this country, losing over 8,000 lives.
But on all the postings through the years in YouTube, other wars are brought in and related to with this song by veterans, and I say, let them. It seems to bring them peace.

When I first heard it all those years ago, I thought the cannon reference meant that it was set in the 1800s or earlier (20th century being artillery or big guns). Being from the UK I didn't link it to Vietnam. Great song though, almost as good as Wichita Lineman.
