A quick test to show the bruton firestorm at high altitude. This is going to be the same for any butane torch type lighter and the higher you get the worse it is. If you spend a lot of time at high altitude you may want to consider a different kind of lighter.

  • Sorry, but thats not exactly high altitude, I've noticed that these kinds of lighters dont exactly work well in the himalaya and on windy rocky mountain peaks. Nice review though =)

  • hah you're right of course, but I also tested them at 13K last summer in CO without much luck either. =) Not quite Himalaya though.

  • Have you sent your findings into Brunton? Maybe there is something they can do on future products.

  • I have not, but it's a pretty well known issue with butane torch lighters. I have several others that all behave the same way in higher altitudes.

  • Try a County Comm Peanut Lighter. They're amazingly resilient and always work!

  • I've been considering that, I just don't like the fluid delivery mechanism. Just seems like it would dry out quickly like a zippo. Thoughts?

  • @demonchacer if you go to a hardware store you should be able to find a new o-ring for it pretty cheap

  • @wishbone1138 sry if this is no longer relevant but i had to put my 2 cents in. the peanut lighters work very well and are water resistant i have taken mine kayaking and they still light up just fine they have orings that keep the fluid from evaporating like that of a zippo. only downside is if you tighten the lid down all the way the oring will be pushed out and will be useless and eventually worn off. i lost the oring on my peanut lighter so now it acts just like a zippo

  • duuude, a "lick my bick" with the all seeing eye on it. Interesting. Btw, thanks for the info about torches.

  • when lighting it hold the button down so you hear the gas escaping for 1-2 sec then push down all the way for it to light every time.

  • Yeah, i'll be taking my firesteel back to nepal this october =)

  • great review and really informative because i live in the mile high city. I also go to school in boulder a full 500 ft above Denver.

    5/5
