In Jan 2008 The Calgary Sexual Health Centre, Seniors Action Group and The Foundation Lab came together to do something about a startling statistic: In 2005 the Public Health Agency of Canada released a stat: positive HIV tests among those over 50 has risen from 7.5% between 1985 and 1998 to 13.5% in 2005
In December 2007 the New England Journal of Medicine released a report that conclude: a recent systematic review of trials of STI risk reduction showed that 89% of the trials excluded patients over the age of 65 years
When we took a look at what was being done we noticed the primary method of intervention was the distribution of condoms. This led us to consider that people over the age of 50 likely had very little knowledge of condoms or the importance of them, let alone the confidence, interest, or in some cases the dexterity to use them. Add to that the World Health Organization's definition of sexual health includes an important component that is often forgotten; not only is sexual health about the absence of disease but also a positive and healthy attitude towards your own and others sexuality and a new play was born.
