Witness the washing action of a 1956 GE dishwasher on it's first cycle...ever! Unused and in storage for 52 years, the machine was restored to operating condition in July 2008
We had a pull-out type, either GE or Westinghouse dishwasher (I was VERY yonug, so I really can't remember the brand) in our first house. The dishwasher must have been installed in about 1960 or so. It had a "Mickey Mouse hat" in the bottom instead of spray arms.
Were the file binder clips extra, or did they come standard with the machine? (ha-ha) We had a GE machine that was done in ten minutes, but was such a monster my parents did not use it because it was hard on the house's old plumbing - starting and stopping the cycle caused severe water hammer in the pipes!
I like that the dishwasher shakes when it is washing. Until 1985, my parents had a KitchenAid KD-12P dishwasher. When the spray arm turned, you could hear the "Woosh", Woosh", "Woosh", Woosh" of the water spraying. It even vibrated the floor a little. It was also a fast machine. The entire cycle was finished in 43 minutes including the drying cycle. The wash and two rinses took a total of about 19 minutes.
My favorite dishwasher - the 1950s GE top loader with the boat propeller. I kid you not, instead of todays machines which wash your dishes with a lawn sprinkler, this bad boy used a propeller rotating at 1750 RPMs. The washing action was so violent that the machine was done in 20 minutes.
If you watch closely, you will notice the entire machine shakes. On the down side, silverware would get, shall we say, dislodged and fall into the propeller's path!
Where on Earth did you get these,Mike? They're GORGEOUS!

you really had to be rich to own a dishwasher in the 50's.
