IAU, NYAM Collaborate to Hold Health Seminar- seminar held by the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM), in association with the International American University College of Medicine (IAUCOM), last Saturday at the IAUCOM campus in Vieux-Fort.

The seminar which was held under the theme" Fragile Brains-The Young and the Old" was very educational, informative and interactive. It generated much participation among participants who showed profound interest in the session.

Senior Vice President and Dean for Clinical Practice at Downstate Medical Center, NY, Dr. James E Cottrell MD, FRCA, in his presentation emphasized the importance of research in curing certain diseases.

"Research is the key in finding cure for patients," he told participants.

He also looked at the outcome of various studies carried out on mice, stating that such research helped a great deal in finding cure for certain diseases.

Dr. Cotrell also explained the difference between the young and ageing brain and how they are affected by anesthesia, and the impact of drugs on them.

Dr. Stephen King who dealt with the topic Prevailing Health Problem in St. Lucia and Remedies, highlighted some of the major health issues in St. Lucia. In his presentation he looked at issues such as the leading causes of death in St. Lucia, the impact of HIV/AIDS and the prevalence of hypotension.

He emphasized that our health problem in St. Lucia is a product of a number of factors such as our behavior and the environment. "Our social system is creating problems for us," he lamented.




The event also consisted of an open forum, where students had their skills sharpen on Residency Matching. During the interactive session students were guided as to how to identify a suitable hospital in the United States to do their clinical.

The seminar forms part of the university's commitment in encouraging academic development and the updating of continuous advances in medical education. IAU also ensures the involvement of the local community in these activities as part of their community development initiative.
