When Japanese warplanes swooped down over Hickam Field on Dec. 7, 1941, as part of the attack on nearby Pearl Harbor, George Mastny took cover behind a set of tents.
Stationed with the Army Air Corps at Hickam, the 20-year-old Mastny and fellow service members were caught off guard. "It was a complete surprise," the 90-year-old Longmont resident said. "We weren't prepared at all."
