"Old King Cole" Lyrics:

Version 1

Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he.
He called for his pipe, and he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three.

Every fiddler, he had a fiddle,
And a very fine fiddle had he.
Oh there's none so rare, as can compare
With King Cole and his fiddlers three.

Historical Background

The history of "Old King Cole" is uncertain; it has been linked to several different figures and eras dating back as early as the third century. Although there is clear reference to a "King Cole," it is debatable which King Cole the rhyme refers to. The most probable suspects are Coel Godhebog (b. 220), Decurion of Rome, also known as Cole the Magnificent; Coel Hen (c. 350 -- c. 420), a leader in Roman or Sub-Roman Britain, also known as Coel the Old; and St. Ceneu ap Coel, son of Coel Hen (c. 382).
