I don't see how the song, as a whole, being about Armageddon contradicts my interpretation of those several lines. He's saying pay attention to the ones you love, because the things you love can be easily destroyed and forgotten. In an Apocalypse one's societal status would no longer be relevant. At least, that's what his lyrics mean to me. (Also I'm pretty sure the song is a double-entendre for sex.)

nah its about armageddon mate. 'storefront cemetery' is a big clue in that. he confirmed this at a gig they played in the sub club in glasgow years ago - what a gig!

I think he's saying, "Look at the way trees stay standing for years (note the trees)... centuries even, as opposed to dust (because the dirt is temporary), which can get blown away in the wind. Even less permanent than dirt, though is (more to mine fact) his pride (face) status (name) and physical possessions (monetary)." -Best I can do. *Also note how trees are living, while dirt is not. He's saying people/living things are more important than inanimate things (such as money).
