In Buenos Aires, the tango is more than just a dance. It's an exclusive way of life dominated by rules and traditions. But now, the old style dancers are being challenged by a new generation.

In clubs like La Virtua, a cultural battle is being played out. Dancers come here to move to the brash beats of the new electronic tango. Their style of dancing is flashier and less formal than the traditional tango. "There are less rules. It's more relaxed", explains dancer Clara Kagan. But not everyone's impressed. As tango teacher Carlos Copello complains; "Now there is a lot of quantity but before there was quality".

  • This documentary is AWESOME. Oh my gosh have you ever captured the essence of what tango really is!!!!!!!!! Just simply brillant! Every tanguero and tanguera will identify instantly. For those who haven't yet experienced the tango there is no better place than this video to understand the attraction and often addiction.

lol, you're kidding right? In traditional tango men were men, women were women, and passion was a way of life. The passion becomes fake and dies away if you don't have those roles. Don't understand why people are confused with that... Listen to Gardel's lyrics, or read some of Neruda's poetry. Those things would have never existed without passion between a real man and a real woman. Remove that, and you end up in the kind of society we have today...

  • "The heyday of this complex dance was in the 1930's and 40's when tanguero Carlos Gardel walked it to Hollywood fame..."

"... in part because the military junta c\shut down the milongas..."

"... it was banned by the military"

"... el tango es in arte, estaba prohibido..."

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!

What an incredible joke and shameless hubris!

women can and do invite men, just more sublte way.

  • maskulin controle in traditional salons?

nice idea. Have you ever tried to ask a woman that would't want to dance with a cabaceo? (with looking) no chance man... maskulin controle...

Also the men are seated by the waiter; everbody basically.

  • Thank you for posting that. It shows a lot of the things I'm trying to explain non-dancers (Tuggels? ;-) again and again.

Very nice to see the places again...

  • Copello is The Man!

  • the girl in red is french no?

anyway, I want to leanr tango since years :'(

  • I think of it more as basic and traditional gender roles. A lady waits for an invitation perhaps in part because it is the man's nature to seek her and win her consent. More practically, I love a skilled partner, but do not always feel qualified to ask such person to dance with me. A leader is wont to choose a partner who can keep up with him- best to wait until he has decided that I can, before imposing my clumsy naivety upon him. At least, that's how I experience it.

  • i don't unerstand, why is it a woman can't invite a man to dance but only a man can??

Is it something to do with sexism??
