When you're a home coffee roaster, you regularly find little stones amongst the beans. If you don't find them, they could potentially decimate your grinder. Looking through them manually is pain-staking, so I thought I'd create a Home Coffee De-stoner to make this job a little easier.

Thanks to the 1929 Patent of the Jabez Burns and Co. "Coffee cleaning apparatus for inspiration.

  • Even small stones are left behind. I used to sort the beans by hand, but 5 kilo's of roasted beans would take 90+ minutes. Now, the same quantity takes about 10 minutes (I took longer in this video given I was doing things one handed) :-)

  • It depends on which beans you use on how many stones you will find.

  • What about the small stones?

I can see that you roast a LOT of beans, so my method would work: Sort the beans. I rigoriously sort the beans, and take out even small defects. Occationally I find stones too. Though I think I've only found three or four stones in the 30 kgs I've roasted so far...
