Just a quick compilation of some of the hits during the competition on Sat April 2 2011. The second place bot, sponsored by Joy mining and driven by Tyler from Venango Technologies Center, finished there despite the main weapon being broken for the last four matches!

  • Aw our first match wasnt in the video :( I'm sure an 11 second KO should be in the greatest hits lol

  • @Magnite7 Unfortunately I don't have all the matches on video. What match are you referring to? I would certainly upload the match if I have it.

  • Thanks for the comment.

The problem with the power is with weight. We can get it up there, but we need to strengthen the supports and drive system as every hit also has an impact on your own bot...

Our new bot for this year is called "Total Khaos" and it took second. Khaos took fourth.

The new bot has a clutch system to help with the impact on the motor, unfortunately our drum shaft bent and we did not have a spare. Big oversight from our side :(

  • @yufasa2 That's why General Thrasher had titanium pegs up front to take the shock loads. I don't blame teams for being conservative in weapon design, but that's why you have a variable speed controller on the weapon.

  • @MrPizzaman09 You are correct, it is not hitting other bots that is a problem, but it is hitting the walls. They don't give way and the result is a bent shaft :(

  • An out of region bot "Pixie" from Bloomsburg High School

  • Yikes! Those are some scary drums!

  • @yufasa2 The General vs Razor V2

    it's on my profile

  • @stangshcky12 18k @ 4" is only ~107 mph and a 4sA123 is good for about 1 kW, which is enough. I like the sounds of the nue motors. I agree that your design method is much more effective (not to break your robot and to have a good drive system), but I like to blow things to pieces. As for the 2 seconds, I think it is plenty quick enough, but the chain should have been changed. We just found out that our MMM controller has always been bad, hence general thrasher used an 800w himax instead :(

  • @MrPizzaman09 They use four cell A123 with custom wound NEU inrunners.

Stats like that mean nothing unless you can drive and actually use the weapon. Our weapons are usually 3.5 to 4" in diamer 3.5 to 4lbs weight at close and 18-22k rpm and we've bounced multiple bots off the cieling.

2 seconds is to long of a spin up time, if you had used a timing belt instead of chain it would have been a little faster

  • @irishcowgirl9 Do you know what batteries / rpm / motors / esc's they were using? I'm guessing about 1000 actual watts and 7k rpm? Did they use an outrunner or inrunner for the weapon? Thunder and Lighting (mulitbot), had 3s2p A123 and a MMM 2200kv combo for the weapon. It was good for 11k, and it would spin up the 3.5lb, 6" diameter eggbeater in 2 seconds. The mini wedge (1.4lbs), had 2 18650 A123's and dual mamba micro pro combos good for 1/2 hp.

  • @irishcowgirl9 I used 1/8" C.F. plate on General Thrasher and Thunder and Lighting. We used swiss cheesed aluminum behind the carbon fiber to give more support. After fighting Khaos and Percy (the 18" helicopter from '09) and several other robots, there was zero damage. The fibrous nature of it allowed for big impacts without braking anything, especially with 10-15 layers of C.F. fabric. Plus, it is 3 times lighter per volume than titanium, so the armor could be much thicker.
