WONG:
India's top vehicle maker, Tata Motors, launched the Nano today. Its the cheapest car in the world and looks set to dramatically change the auto market in the world's second most populous nation.
STORY:
The Nano debuted in January 2008 and was expected to be on sale late last year.
The price for a base model is about $2,500. And there are added costs for extras such as air conditioning.
But the locals are definitely impressed.
[Sushant Vagel, Local]:
"It is the world's cheapest car and it is useful for middle class people like me and I am definitely planning to buy this car."
But the cars arent due till the middle of the year. Large-scale production has been delayed by a relocation row that shifted production to Gujarat from West Bengal last year.
[Devendra Arya, Local]:
The dream car that Tata has launched for the common man, we want to thank Tata for that."
The car can seat four people.
Tata Motors chairman Rata Tata says his inspiration for the cheap car was the common sight of a family of four riding on a motorbike.
