Jay Newell, Associate Professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communicationy at Iowa State University, uses a quick, low-stress way of getting a lot of useful information. During the second or third week of class, he asks all students to take a sheet of paper, divide it into quadrants and enter the following information: Plus - What I [the student] am doing now to help myself learn about advertising; Delta - What I [the student] should be doing to help myself learn about advertising; Plus - What the instructor does now to help me learn about advertising; Delta - What the instructor should do to help me learn about advertising. This exercise not only enables Dr. Newell to get a sense of what teaching practices the students find most beneficial and what modifications he might want to consider, it also prompts students to take the time to seriously consider their learning and ways in which it could be improved (metacognition).
