This is from The Lanier Library Lecture Series titled The Fire That Consumes: A Biblical and Historical Study of the Doctrine of Final Punishment by Edward Fudge given Sep 24, 2011. The lecture was limited to 800 persons and was closed off several weeks beforehand. It was attended by a broad spectrum of folks on this issue yet the lecture was warmly received by all.

Around the world today, evangelical Bible scholars are giving hell a serious second look. Would the God who gave his Son to die for sinners finally keep billions of them alive forever to torment them without end? Does Holy Scripture require such a conclusion—or offer a different vision? The story of how the great majority of Christians came to teach unending conscious torment is as fascinating as any mystery or "Who-done-it." In this lecture, Edward Fudge will identify scores of generally-overlooked Scriptures, then lead a tour through some paths of church history that are less well travelled, and which are haunted by pagan philosophy, medieval law and Reformation politics.

  • Why would a God of love burn His children for all eternity? If I spanked my child eight hours for disobeying me, you would call the police and have me arrested. And yet many people believe that God will burn people in the lake of fire for days without end. The wages of sin is death, not eternal torment.

  • @vik7777free Well said.

  • Idiots like Dunce Fudge think that death means non-existance and the bible never alludes to any such thing.

  • @gtrjunky You would do well to address real issues rather than imagined ones. Edward does not address this issue you raise anywhere. Your name calling just reveals the depravity that is in your heart and in your mind.

  • Thank you God for Edward Fudge, Thank you for websites like thetruthabouthell, thank you for Christians who are willing to stand up and be called cultists to defend your name. Hell truly is the most evil and despicable lie spread about God, it makes him seem like a cruel masochist, in fact many atheists use hell to insult Christians. I am glad to live in this time, when the truth can be known. I will continue to speak of "The lake of fire" as the end for the wicked. Goodbye Hell.

  • this is good watchin.very interesting, i am of the universalist persuasion though, this guy has done his homework and i tip my hat to anyone who objectively looks at the evil doctrine of hell...thanks for posting this

  • @fleetwd1 Depravity is lying to lost people about their eternal destiny.

  • Rev 20:10 the devil... was thrown into the lake of burning sulphur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night FOR EVER AND EVER.

Heb 9:27 man is destined to die once and after that face judgement,

Rev 20:13-15 and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found in the book of life he was thrown into the lake of fire.

  • @dmionno74 Nope it means it was real. Jesus quoted dialogue between the rich man and Abraham. If Abe never said those things then Jesus was lying, mplain andf simple. Of course that would require common sense which you people missed the boat on. Also, God said the wages of sin was death, not "nonexistence". Go learn something moron!
