Momentous days for Bern, already member of the swiss confederation and Fribourg, still under Habsburg rule: after prolonged disputes, the two Savoyard princes, Louis, Prince of Piemont and Philip, Prince of Geneva, made up there on May 3rd, 1438. At the same time, the two cities also signed treaties with one another. The two rival princes, both sons of Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy, finally signed their peace agreement, which was celebrated with appropriate extravagance, also in terms of music. Guillaume Dufay, at that time in service of Amadeus VIII, composed this motet to praise the generous two cities of Bern and Fribourg, which is sung in a grandiose and ornate manner. Their treaty crowned the brothers peace agreement of which "the Dacians, Turks, Parthians and Arabs shall hear."
