Here we are firing up another clear mercury bulb like in my first yardblaster video except this time we won't be using a refractor so you can see what goes on. I love the purple, pink and blue startup flashes. It looks like a magical spell happening and the color reminds me of an enchanted forest. Much prettier than the gloomy halloween color of a high pressure sodium bulb.

  • its Educational Though.

  • Actually, I believe the emitter on the electrodes sputters off onto the inside of the arc tube, eventually, it wears out and the starting voltage needed to start the lamp is too high, which is then considered burnt out

  • I grew up with mecury bulbs in villages & town centres. Some bulbs would dim a bit at the end of it's life span but little light pollution. Unlike with SOX bulbs. Not keen on them these days. Good in the fog but don't like the light it gives out

  • Sorry..I think I have HID no Mercury

  • .>>>>>>and when i put it to the microwave ..it started to bright-white arcing ...btw,there was not any inner ignitier ..(no reason for the purple arcs) ..only a resistor for starting electrode ....it is 250W tube..thx for hep

  • I have 2 mercury vapor bulbs seem just like this..but....they are damaged they don't wanna to start at all ....when I put it on higher voltage (2100V), it starts to arcing ,but not in the quartz arc tube ....It seems the gas escaped from the tube and that causes the purple arcs in the bulb..I tried to brake one of them and I pulled the tube out from the bulb ...It not seems to be damaged at all ..>>>>>

  • what are these used for?

  • mercury vapor lamps rarely explode...and can burn way past their rated life....high pressure sodium lamps almost never explode either....Quartz Metal Halide Lamps do however.
