USA - NUCLEAR : California is famous for its beautiful beaches. But tucked between Los Angeles and San Diego, is the San Onofre nuclear power plant, one of two atomic stations along America 's Pacific Coast. Local environmental groups are worried about what could happen if a severe earthquake strikes here. They say this plant has too much in common with the Fukashima reactors in Japan. They are both near fault lines and both close to the ocean.
Neither the USGS nor Caltech nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake. They do not know how and they do not expect to know how any time in the foreseeable future. However based on scientific data, probabilities can be calculated for potential future earthquakes..Scientists estimate that over the next 30 years the probability of a major earthquake occurring in the San Francisco Bay area is 67% and 60% in Southern California. earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/faq/?faqID=13

I would just like to say that this plant would normally be safe against most disasters (no plant is indestructible) The thing that worries me is the amount of nuclear waste stored there. Originally it was all supposed to be moved to the Yucca Mountains Storage Facility, but it was cancelled by the Obama administration. We need to push for this storage facility to be build it! Not just for us who live in San Clemente, but for the enitre country, because as of right now all waste is stored on site

San Clemente citizen here, I have emailed Jen Tucker, to the email address on the city website it is an Email Black hole, if we have to count on her, we are DOOMED!

@yousaytomatoisaywhy Er, no. Coal is the dirtiest. Oil and natural gas isn't much cleaner. And ultimately (given our current technology, power demand, and budget) we have little other option but to use all of those, nuclear power, bio fuel, hydroelectric power, wind power, and a plethora of others to make ends meet. Yes, in a idealistic world we'd have fusion technology by now, but suffice to say we don't have the ability to do that yet...

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!! Fukushima has BWR. San onofre has PWR. If we lose power in an earthquake( which is not very likely since that area has been free of seismic activity for the past 1,000 years), the rods will drop into the core and if the pumps fail, the water will leave the core and since the water IS the moderator, fission will no longer be possible.

Nuclear energy is the dirtiest and most dangerous form of energy with polluting contamination lasting for millions of years . The industry is not required to have plans to deal with the waste. Replacing nuclear power plants with submerged sea turbines, windmills, geothermal, methane gas from landfill, building off grid super energy efficient houses would create jobs. In fact if would be like a Marshall Plan that would revitalize the economy

Both power plants are total madness and storing the spent fuel on site is even crazier...but politicians are not going to take the proper decision without considerable pressure from the public. Unfortunately “concerned and loving” Californian parents have already cannibalized the future of their children so many ways that a little more or a little less doesn’t matter any longer. Just like the Japanese people will never do anything to stop this madness, neither will the Californians.

SCE is “reviewing” the extension application and is already considering renewal due the importance of nuclear for the growing population of California. SCE plans to bill customers $21.6 million for a bogus study that will end up granting the extension regardless.

Owned by PG&E (the company responsible for the massive gas explosion and inferno of San Bruno) it’s 420-ton nuclear-reactor vessel had a humbling starts when it was build backwards in 1977. It’s licence won’t expire before 2022 and is probably going to be extended until 2042. PG&E also own Diablo Canyon power plant which is also looking for a 20 years extension to its licence.
