A new non-profit founded by a Miami college student to provide solar-powered lights in rural India to combat kerosene illness

Ximena Prugue, at 19, has already registered her ambitious initiative, Giving the Green Light, as a 501C3 - with a vision to to supply 10,000 solar lights in rural India by June of 2011 to replace toxic kerosene lamps. We want to start in Bihar, which is India's poorest state, says Ximena. BoGo light is supplying the lights to us at $10 each. Through fundraising, we will supply flashlights to villagers at no charge, since $10 is a huge investment in areas were 10 cents buys you a decent meal.

Ximena was born and raised in Miami to Peruvian parents. After she completes her Bachelor's in Industrial Engineering, she hopes to develop her own product using solar-powered energy that will alleviate poverty in developing countries and protect our environment. She is currently organizing a local fundraiser, as well as planning a childrens book based on the Giving the Green Light project that will engage children in the environment at an early age, with profits going to the cause.
