The BTR2-GT wasn't the official number, it's what they were affectionately known as by the technical staff at the time. "GT" as in motor racing.

When I worked in the Beeb back in the 70's we still had some BTR2's very much in use. The stereo ones were known as "BTR-2-GT"

Thank you for the info, I have the stereo machines however, the valve stereo was called the BTR-3/2 and the BBC modded BTR-2 was called the RD4/4 (I have one of these too) however I didn't know they called it the BTR-2-GT, what did the GT stand for?
