This ballad gem, tucked away on the Jackson 5's debut album, never became a hit but has become an enduring cult favorite over the years with soul fans. The lyrics tell the tale of a reformed romeo who realizes the error of his ways too late to snare the one woman he truly loved. The chorus reveals all he can feel is regret: "Dont you know I sit around/With my head hanging down/And I wonder whos lovin you?" The music blends gospel-styled swirls of ascending notes with a swooning ballad-styled loveliness and filters it into a tight verse-chorus package to create a song that delivers plenty of emotion in a concise fashion. This Smokey Robinson-penned classic was originally recorded by the Miracles and covered by other Motown acts like the Temptations and Brenda Holloway. However, the Jackson 5 remains the definitive version for many soul fans thanks to its strong arrangement and stunning vocals. Bobby Taylors stylish production effectively grafts lilting strings to a strong beat from the rhythm section and the Jackson brothers lay down a smooth bed of vocal harmonies that are just as lush as the strings. However, the key hook of this recording is the heart-stopping lead vocal from Michael Jackson: his pained tenor voice soars like that of a choirboy but he pours a level of emotion into the song that is adult beyond its years. All these hooks add up to one of the best ballads Motown put out during the 1970's. "Whos Lovin You" never managed to score tremendous chart success despite being the b-side of the highly successful "I Want You Back. Just the same, it has earned a well-deserved place in the hearts of 1970's R&B fans everywhere and remains one of the all-time greatest Michael Jackson vocal performances.
Often imitated, but never, never, never can ever be duplicated.
