This is a verry easy way to purify DIY grade chemicals for use in laboratory. Its a much cheaper alternative compared to buying expensive verry pure chemicals. Since DIY acetone only costs a few euros per liter.

Acetone (2-propanone) can be distiled at a verry low temperture (58 degrees celcius) the polution boils at a much higher temperture so the distilate contains atleast 99,9 (m/m) % propanone.

As you can see I only used a simple hot-water bath to heat up the reaction. For cooling water I use a small pump.
I did not use an internal thermometer since the temperture of the waterbath was kept at a steady 65 degrees.

At the end the residue is a verry brownisch liquid.

  • Yes it can, it wil be important to keep the temperture as low as posible since nail polisch remover also contains some oil like compounds.

But why use nail polisch remover? DYI acetone is much cheaper to purchase, where I live it can be bought in containers of 1000ml for just a few euro's.

The DIY grade acetone is usualy pure enough to use for home-lab experiments, you don't need to do any purification steps. Some synthesis require extra pure acetone, such as in an aldol reaction.

  • So I could use this to get relatively pure acetone from, say, nail polish remover?
