  • @wantmohr Well, i have 300-400$ to work with. I looked into the novation launchpads and those go for around 150$. I want to chop the samples directly, but like you said, the sp cant do this :( I am gonna be using a computer as well. Is the ableton program free or does it cost money? sorry for all the questions lol, its just that you are the only person im seeing who uses this equipment for non dubstep/house music, because i am not going for those sounds at all.

  • @piilky hah no worries. Unfortunately the full version of Ableton is fairly expensive, but the launchpad comes with a slimmed down "Ableton Launchpad Edition" which is obviously missing a bunch of features but is still enough to help you learn the program. There's also something out there called Maschine Micro which goes for around $400. It's made for sampling and beat making and it comes with its own software in which you can chop stuff up, sequence and such.

  • hey, i am trying to get into sampling/producing beats. im looking into a roland sp-404, but i wanted to hear if you had any suggestions of what things i should look into and need to get.

  • @piilky Hey, the SP-404 is an awesome device but one thing you need to know about it is that you can't really chop up samples directly on it. Sooo if you did want to use one for producing you'd need to get a DAW for chopping up samples/making loops and then export them to the SP.

To be honest, if you want an easier solution I'd recommend a cheap controller & Ableton Live. Learning Ableton is a bitch, but once you get the hang off it you realize that it can honestly do pretty much anything ...

  • @wantmohr ... Some other options to consider are Maschine and (the obvious) MPC. I haven't actually had a chance to work with either but I always hear very good things.

But honestly, just figured what you want to do, how you want to do it, whether or not you need/want a computer around and a price range. Also if you have a chance, go to a music store and try some stuff out it will really give you a good idea of what each product is capable of!

Hopefully that helps! Sorry if I rambled on hah
