AU PRIVAVE by Charlie Parker-Jatap album: Sugan-Phil Woods with Red Garland Phil Woods, alto saxophone Ray Copeland, trumpet Red Garland, piano Teddy Kotick, bass Nick Stabulas, drums
@pvelectric - You suppose the club's mgmt didn't want to corrupt your youth w/all this wicked jazz? The nerve, that 'bozo snoot' - LOL! I think you must've been a pretty in-tune, evolved youngster---& definitely xlnt taste. Hey, I too know SM Blvd / Hollywood but didn't arrive in L.A. till 1970's.
@tompethic - It seems that my eyeballs have rolled back inside my head! Enjoyed your post. Hardly ever hear Red Garland's name (pity!) or even know of anyone who knows of his extraordinary gift at the piano....so this is a real gift to me, finding this audio track. I wish there was a video to go w/it, too. Really, THE RECOVERY ROOM? Perfect name for a jazz club, hah (love that!). My father was a jazz musician in Chicago's nite life - he'd have gotten a kick out that name & this recording, too.
Garland held forth for years as the house band, his trio, in a bar-restraunt on Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood, early 60s, and several times us underage friends and I tried to get in. Very strong "No" from mgm, including even meeting band members out back on break. Sunday afternoon once, with parent along even, again no dice. Either owner or mgr. seemed like a real bozo snoot to us then. Refused even to give info on where Garland's next concerts would be!
