Based on a novel of the same name by Emile Zola, but updated to contemporary France, the fillm makes an unveiled condemnation on the world of high finance. Thanks to its modern setting and simple story of greed and corruption, the film is just as relevant today as it was in the late 1920s. The cinematography is AMAZING, well ahead of its time. Musical accompaniment by Jean-Francois Zygel. Starring Brigitte Helm, Marie Glory , Yvette Guilbert. Cinematography by Jules Kruger. Art director: Jacques Manuel.

  • Indeed. I don't understand why it is not more well known.

  • This is easily one of the best silent films ever made.

  • Superb cross-cutting between the sleeping woman and the disturbing events at the Bourse.
