History of Koxinga Shrine
Koxinga died in 1662, after his death, the Taiwanese built "Kai Sham Lord Temple" in the early period of Qing rule, to worship Koxinga in appreciation for his contribution to the island, and to commemorate his rule.
In 1874, when Imperial General Inspector Shen Baozhen came to Taiwan to organize coastal defenses, he became aware of the great admiration the Taiwanese had for Koxinga, and petitioned the emperor to build a shrine in order to sacrifice to Koxinga officially. The Taiwanese raised the funds, and im ported the material and architects from Fujian to expand the original site: the result was a Southern Chinese-style building named "Yen-Ping Lord Shrine".
1896, the Japanese Tainan Governor, petitioned the Japanese Central Administration to list this site as "Kai Shan Shrine" in 1807, it was not .only the first Shrine in Tainan established by Japanese Government, but also the only one Japanese Shrine worshipped the Chinese God.
After the World War II, "Kai Shan Shrine" has been abolished; the name of "Yen-Ping Lord Shrine" recovered, and repaired in 1917. Till 1964, Koxinga Shrine has been rebuilt, and a Northern-style palatial building was erected instead of the Southern-style construction. Besides, on the former site of Kai Shan Shrine, the building of "National Collection Exhibition Hall" was established.
Legend has it that the statue of Kai Shan Lord has been moved outer temple in 1965, and worshiped by turns of the believers for more than 40 years. In 2008, in order to respect the belief origin, Tainan City Mayer: Mr. Hsui, Tien-Tsai petitioned the allowance of the god, then picked up the origin statue back and settled in the altar to recover the original worship condition.
