In the precinct of Sensoji Temple, there is a restored statue of Ichikawa Danjuro IV acting the part of Kamakura Gongoro, a character from a famous kabuki program Shibaraku who is a young boy with bangs. The naki sumo or crying baby contest is held every year together with an annual memorial ceremony at the temple to pray for healthy growth of babies to become strong as Gongoro. At the event, student sumo wrestlers from the Nihon University try to make the babies cry on the ring to decide the winner. Spectators enjoy watching the contract between large wrestlers and tiny babies as the wrestlers struggle with babies who often laugh instead of crying or even fall asleep during the match.
