A short video about the Norwich looping festival - all done on mobile phone cameras - apologies for the quality - massive thanks to andy butler for a wonderful and inspiring day...

Norwich Festival of Live Looping
Featuring Stephen Scott + Matt Stevens + Michael Peters + Darkroom + andy butler [sic]

Saturday 17 November : 1-5pm
FREE!

A fabulous line up of creative looping artists, with Michael Peters (Germany), Darkroom (with special guest Andy Booker on drums), Matt Stevens, Stephen Scott and andy butler [sic].

A groundbreaking free event is taking place at Norwich arts centre on the afternoon of Saturday 17th November when it plays host to the Norwich Festival of Live Looping.

Collator, and curator of this unique event is renowned Loop guitarist andy butler [sic]. He has played at the worlds largest festivals of live looping, in Santa Cruz, California, and Zurich, and is now playing a series of concerts in Chapels, Churches, Cafes and Art galleries locally in the hope of promoting a local live looping scene.

Andy Butler

Live Looping as andy states 'allows a musician to record their playing then play it back straight away. Usually the playback is allowed to repeat itself, creating loops of sound which can be combined, edited, and transformed during the performance'.

Hand picked, and chosen by Mr butler the event brings together five of the most interesting, and original acts who are currently active on the Live Looping scene. Opening the show will be Stephen Scott who creates sparsely beautiful loops, and combines them with haunting melodies to form sonic tapestries.

He will be followed by London based acoustic guitarist Matt Stevens who seamlessly lays down a jazz inspired backing as a foil for his intricate solo work.

Michael Peters, from Germany, has been making loop guitar music since 1980, is a well respected melodic, yet experimental musician, and during his years of travelling the globe has collected field recordings from different continents that occasionally end up in his music.

Darkroom, from Cambridge, are a duo comprising tasteful, textured guitarist Michael Bearpark, and laptop man Os, who will be using looping software to sample, and re-configure the guitar sounds. For this performance they will be joined by electro drummer Andy Booker who may well also have his rhythms remixed while he is playing.

Concluding the afternoon will be andy butler whose music encompasses many, and varied styles ranging from jazz, blues, and rock to electronica, and Indian ragas, with all relevant instrumental sounds being drawn from his guitar. Andy will be performing tunes from his highly rated debut solo cd ' Live looping' as well as a selection of new compositions.

  • Mmm, so how do I get to play this festival? Have a look at my looping vids, pretty old stuff now, it has improved these days, but still, take a peek. I have a new one up, someone recorded it at the golden eagle restival in Lincoln, it is called Don;'t Look Down, would be super if people take a peek.

  • Nice video.

It is very exciting, musically speaking, and makes want to take my axe and my RC-2 or AmbiLoop.

  • I was in a band that used only loops but we fed radio noise and found sounds onto the tape instead of musical instruments.

  • Awesome! Looping is the ultimate in musical self gratification. Check out my looping vid in the video responses. Also many more on my page.
