Video by the Center for a New American Dream

Psychologist Tim Kasser discusses how America's culture of consumerism undermines our well-being. When people buy into the ever-present marketing messages that "the good life" is "the goods life," they not only use up Earth's limited resources, but they are less happy and less inclined toward helping others. The animation both lays out the problems of excess materialism and points toward solutions that promise a healthier, more just, and more sustainable life.

Hey, Zombie, it's OK as long as you give it years and years of good use! It's not about living in the caves, but making a fair use of what we got ;).

Um, anybody, I mean ANYBODY who falsely believes that Materialism and Collectivism are going to rocket us into utopia are either ignorant or evil. They're not. Don't know bout the rest of you...but I'm far too logical and reasoned to believe this idealized tripe we're being pitched. Our present government, you know, the people who hold public office that are marionettes to a "higher" power? You're nothing more than sheep, or cattle. Who owns the lamb...the farmer? Or the ewe? Get a clue.

And once we die, when we're all dead and gone to our graves, the stuff we accumulate is left to someone(or somebody)else. People buy new cars to feel happy and they enjoy them, Like me! I just got myself a new 2013 Chevy Equinox! Bought it in February 2013! It's a nice vehicle with all the cool features like OnStar!

We spend a lot, we consume a lot, our houses look like warehouses(or storage rooms)and we just buy and keep buying but we will stop buying if we wanted to once the money runs out(which we should be saving)we see something on TV, magazines, hear about it on the radio, on the internet, read about it in the newspaper and then go out and get it only to put ourselves in debt.

Capitalism is a tool that happens to be supperior to any other system that I know of at distributing products. The issue with me is: What are we distributing? As a bad example, capitalism extended to owning people in cotton producing states prior to the 1880s. As a good example, you can engage in trade according to your values and nurture interdependent relationships of your choosing. How we use tools should weave in appropriately with the type of society we want to live in.
