(This video was projected onto a life-size cut-out of a painted white, blindfolded person. As the figures in the video walked towards it, they were distorted to fit the size of the cut-out)
Cut-Out is inspired by the Invisibile Man, by Ralph Ellison, which is about a man struggling to understand his identity, and Peter Sarkisians work, which combines sculpture and video to create chilling art. It asks questions about the limits society puts on individuals to be a certain height, or weight, or colour, limits which tell us how to dress, how to look, how to be beautiful, limits that try to turn individuals of all shapes and sizes, of all colours and backgrounds into one massive perfect mob. It asks viewers to remove the blindfolds of society and look further than the shell of their and others bodies, to be more than just cut-outs, ready to be coloured and created by the expectations of others.
