Despite the use of low molecular weight Heparin, deep vein thrombosis is still a relevant risk factor for immobilized patients following orthopedic surgery. The Phlebostep is an air cushion that is positioned between the patients foot and the end of the bed. It has an integrated sound and counter device allowing feed-back to patient and medical staff.
A preliminary study in post-operative patients following orthopedic surgery showed an increase in venous blood flow of 99.9% in the Phlebostep exercised leg.
The Phlebostep is the brain child of assoc. Prof. Dr. Olivier, Director of the Dept. of Orthopedic, Trauma and Hand Surgery at St.-Josefs-Hospital, Cloppenburg, Germany.
