"The only reason I have a roof over my head is because I inherited some money from my grandparents... They were the only ones that cared about me," She sobbed as she shook. "and as of 3 weeks ago, they're gone too..." I could feel a small tear slip from my eyes. Why did I cry for this girl? I barely knew her. She had been through so much. Yeah, she had it a little worse than me family-wise. She had no one, but she had something that I didn't. A life. And, it is for that reason, that she should face life full on without strife.
"I'm sorry, Demi," I whispered, stroking her hair. She continued to cry. After a few minutes, she pulled away with silent tears still sliding down her cheeks. Her eyes bore into mine for a moment before she broke eye contact. Demi wiped her eyes and sniffed, turning to face away from me.
"Joe?" She called for me quietly. I rubbed her back gently.
"Yeah?" I answered. Demi turned back to me with a shattered expression on her features. She was officially broken.
"I'm done.." My eyebrows knitted in confusion. What had she meant by done, I thought. Demi's lips pressed in a tight line, still quivering with vulnerability. "I don't want to live anymore..." She whispered. My heart stopped. She can't...
"What are you saying?" I asked with wide eyes. Demi shook her head and sniffed.
"Isn't it obvious?" I bit my lip and took her hand gently in mine.
"Demi... Don't do this.. It's a stupid to even think about it," I told her, complete seriousness oozing from my voice. If I couldn't save my own life, I was definitely going to make sure that she lived hers.
"You don't get it!" She told me stubbornly. "My life SUCKS. I have NO ONE! No one knows me... no one takes the time. They only like the idea of who they think I am.. not me. My own mom and dad don't even care about me. What's the point?" Tears were glazing over her amber gold irises faster than light could travel.
"But I do get it, Demi.." I whispered to her. "I do.." I confirmed, holding her more tightly to my body. "Life sucks. Big Time, but death isn't a way out.. It's an ending. You can't end your life when it hasn't even started yet." I stared intently into her eyes. I had to get through to her. I had to. No matter what.
"Why do you care?" Demi asked me in a shaky tone. "Just live your life...and I'll...live mine.." Her voice cracked. I gazed at her impassively for a moment before letting a solemn chuckle escape my lips. Live my life? Wouldn't I love that? It's just too bad that wasn't in God's plan.. I sucked in a breath and looked up into the bright starry night. If only.
"It's not so easy to 'live my life' when I have a time limit. I'm practically a ticking bomb," I said quietly. She was quiet. Probably confused. I just stared at the sky thoughtfully for a moment. My eyes landed on her again. My lips twitched as I unsuccessfully tried to give a smile to symbolize a glitter of hope because there was. For her. "I just don't want you to be pessimistic." I told her, letting out a long, tired breath. "Life holds special treasures for those who dare to dream..." My eyes had finally pulled away from her as I examined her face. She was bemused.
"What did you mean...time limit?" Demi whispered, curiosity taking the best of her. I grimaced. Here comes the line that has everyone running for the hills...
"I have leukemia, and I have about a year left..."
