I remember this song from the ESC of 1960 -- cringeworthy stuff really, though of course 'corn' was pretty much the diet of the day back then. It's interesting to play Guy Mitchell's "She Wears Red Feathers" and this song, back to back, including those whistled bars. You might be struck by the resemblance this UK entry bears to the American song...
