Suicide, in my amateur opinion. Ritualistic disposal of his treasured belongings, it also serves to make his disappearance appear to be due to foul play, maybe for insurance payments for his family? He was a police officer once, he would know a suicide's body is easily found, so he may have just wandered off to do it in a predetermined location. He also had a degenerative disease that grossly impacts and diminishes the quality of life of its sufferers. Regardless of what happened, it's so sad.

Robert E. April, a coworker of Curtis's, is considered a person of interest in this case. In October 2008, he was arrested for threatening to kill the brother of a man who owed him money. In the threat, he had allegedly said he had killed and buried Curtis. Robert has not been charged with or officially connected to Curtis's disappearance.
