History and Apperance:
The Ilyrian Sheepdog is a large, muscular, strongly-built dog. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers,
and the front legs account for approximately 55% of the height.
The head is large but proportional to the body, with dark eyes and a kind expression.
The Ilyrian Sheepdog is a large, strong, long haired dog with an impressive appearance. It is a very capable livestock guardian and takes great care of its flock.
Its impressive appearance, massive head, and compact build, with strong and muscular legs presents a very formidable foe to anything that threatens its flock.
It has fiery eyes which shows intelligent and its brave nature. It has a sincere character and is very sharp when it is required.
-IMPORTANT : The Sarplaniac and Ilyrian Sheepdog are not the same breed, the Sarplaninac its created from German Shepherd and Ilyrian Sheepdog beacuse
the Yougoslavian Army wanted to have army dog like the Illyrian Sheepdog but with more army abilities so they mixed the Illyrian Sheepdog with German Shepherd, true Ilyrian Sheepdogs are larger and are known of their courage.

The Illyrian Sheepdog comes from the hart of Shar Mountains(Illyria, Ancient Dardania now Kosova and Albania) where only warriors can survive."When the Ilyrian Sheepdog takes control of the sheeps all the problems from predators are gone" is a breed of high Antiquity, believed by many to be one of, if not the oldest true Molosser in the world. There's an old Albanian folk legend that says the breed remembers the time when everything used to be under water except for the highest mountains, implying the connection to the Biblical flood, but more likely referring historically to the period when the entire region was covered by the Pannonian Sea.It is the Balkans where Molossers come from, having spread on all sides of the world thousands of years ago, influencing the establishment of most modern mastiff and shepherd dog breeds, leading some to conclude that the Shar Mountain This breed was formerly named the Illyrian Sheepdog was first recognized by the F.C.I. in 1939.
Dog is the oldest dog of this type.This breed is most commonly associated with the Shar Mountains region which is how it got its name.

It is slightly longer in width then height, index size for male dogs is 104-108 cm whereas for female dogs is 106-110.
Height in Male Dogs: 70-78cm
Height in Female Dogs: 68-74cm
Weight in Male Dogs: 50-65kg
Weight in Female Dogs: 45-55kg
Over 50% of exemplar male dogs are taller than 72cm whereas in female dogs 68cm

Temperament:
Illyrian Sheepdogss are powerfull, strong, aggressive, fearless, loyal guardians.The temperament of the breed is described as independent, aloof with outsiders, and calm until a threat to the flock presents itself,
when suddenly the Shar erupts into swift ferocity. The breed has a "highly" protective nature. In the absence of a flock of sheep, the Shar Dog will often treat its humans as sheep - herding them away from danger or undesirable areas. They are serene and majestic, gentle with children and smaller dogs.
They are also highly intelligent and bred to survive without human supervision while guarding the flocks in the high pastures. Young pups can denude a property of small animals until trained not to hunt.
The Illyrian Sheepdog its a very strong dog and gentle to family members but aggressive to strangers, poeple somtimes use it as a fighting dog.Its known for his strength, brave hart, big body and courage against mountain beasts, dogs and strangers.
The Illyrian Sheepdog its a livestock guarding dog and its duty its to protect the sheeps from other dogs, wolfs, foxs, cougars, cheetahs, jaguars, bears and other mountain beasts,
this dog in a video made in Kosova "Sharr Mountains" killed to full grown wolfs on its own so he is well known as a great fighter.
