Fix your dv7 by popping out the processor. Fixes the black screen no boot problem. Take note that dissassembling your HP is required an you will void the warranty. This fix works only if the LEDs by the caps lock button are blinking once every couple seconds after turning it on. For processor upgrade information, and additional LED error code identifications, go to http://goo.gl/tID54

UPDATE 8/28/11: Today I reassembled my DV7 (again) but I did something new that appears to have fixed the problem. I took a gift shop souveneir penny and stuck it between the processor and the heatsink and tightened the screws. The computer turned on but the only problem is the fan runs high... I don't know if thats because the CPU is legitly getting hot or if the fan just doesn't like my hack. Time will tell

  • i tried to read the supported cpus, said i wasnt invited. can u invite me?

  • @c0rrupts3ct0r555 Thanks for letting me know! I made the site public now, let me know if it works.

  • You are just lucky the laptop boots up. The root problem for the HP dv series of laptops is a poor video chip heat-sink and cooling design. I have been repairing these for years. The only possible fix is re-flowing the solder around the video chip. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it will work for a month or so and give out. I have about a 60% long term success rate. When you opened your laptop it put stress on the MB which temporarily allowed your video chip to function. Re-flow solder.

  • @captenvideo1 It isn't always the video chip that has the problem though. I would be willing to bed at least half the people experiencing this issue just need to disassemble their laptop and pop out the processor. In the next video I made I describe how to make this temporary processor fix last much longer., I've gone 2 months without having to disassemble my dv7 again because of a simple penny trick.

  • wouldnt replaicng the procesor work for good so u wouldnt have 2 keep takeing apart your laptop every week becasue i have the smae issue with my dv7 i turn it on and then the screens thier for like 4 min then it goes away and its just blackness but woudl completly replacing the processor work fr good??

  • @vegitibles I bought a newer processor on eBay and put it in but I had the same symptoms. I just fixed disassembled my laptop (again) but I took a copper penny that had been flattened at a souveneir shop and stuck it between the processor and the heatsink and now it works so far! I'll let you know how long this keeps it alive.

  • The black screen is most of the time caused by the faulty Nvidia chip. 4 blinks on startup indicate a graphics problem, for more codes do a search for "hp error blinks" or something similar. The problem usually is the solder used under the GPU. It disintegrates rather quickly due it's lead free consistence(is believed to be the issue). Re-flow soldering the chip will liquify the solder for a brief moment allowing ever pin to connect correctly again. A temporary fix, which can hold for years.

  • Follow the disassemble guide on youtube "Full Disassembly of a HP DV7 Series Notebook" by setnevp Part 6 explains how to oven bake the board. Only do this as a last resort when all else fails.

  • I tried the above method, but it did not work for me. I decided to oven bake the mother board and that got everything working again as normal.

  • The DV7 line usually does not suffer from the same issues as the dvXXXX series laptops. DV7 common issues are bad 12V+ FETs on the power input line, bad CPU PW regulators, bad PWM chips (dv7-2xxx), as well as a few other issues. Sometimes replacing a processor works, sometimes not, processors are just a few bucks, so it's worth a shot. If it winds up being something else, you're in for a lot of diagnosis & board level-repairs :D

  • @weatherman92k ok hey, i just reflowed my dv7 by putting it in the oven (mb) works fine now. but i was getting the 1 flash code, also i would get the 3 and 4 flash code as well. strange.
