In the military it is "SIR" or 'MA'AM' that is the proper way for an enlisted man to address any officer or for an officer to address any superior officer. So the General was responding the way he was taught. Boxer should have accepted that the general was not not showing any sign of disrespect to her.

@marianne723 That's not how the senate works. You have to get elected, and depending on state rules, if a rep. dies, then he or she may be appointed. The General called her male colleagues senator, then switched to m'am when talking to her.
