It took the civil war over 100 years to play out - this started some of the creation of true equality. Some of these pilots were career USAF officers and some retired generals.

I don't think this movie played much in the South. It shows that the very basis of segregation, that is that blacks are unable to learn, was wrong.
It also shows that the people who said Ronald Regan was a racist, were wrong. He could have declined the job.
