This video, entitled "Democracy and Free Speech," illustrates the basic link between the two. It suggests that the foundations of free speech are freedom of press and freedom of expression. Although most would not include freedom of press as part of freedom of speech together I believe that they are related as you can't have freedom of press without free speech. It asserts that without freedom of press we would have a misinformed public and without freedom of expression we would not have open political discourse. Considering that a democratic government is controlled by the population it presides over, it cannot exist with a misinformed public and censured opinion. It uses various clips from lectures, speeches, news shows, and debates.

The fact is freedom of the press means that it's free speech only for those who own a press... advocating a free and independent press only prepares the way for the rich to buy a press and influence others to their own point of view. The simple truth remains that unless a press is impelled by threat of force to provide equal and complete coverage of elections to all registered political parties, the press will always act in the interest of it's owners or those who control the press.
