Construction of the Glass Courtyard

The Glass Courtyard at the Jewish Museum Berlin was built by the architect Daniel Libeskind in 2007. The glass roof covers the 670 m² U-shaped courtyard of the baroque Old Building -- the former Collegienhaus -- and is supported by four freestanding bundles of steel pillars. The structure of a tree was the inspiration for the supporting pillars which extend into the roof forming a steel network. Daniel Libeskind based his design on the Jewish holiday Sukkot, named after the huts the Israelites lived in as they wandered the desert after escaping slavery in Egypt.
