Sad but true.

Bulgaria, one of the EU's newest members (joining in January 2007), has been through mammoth changes in the last few years. Many of the cities and resorts have been undergoing construction booms galore, tempting buyers from Western Europe with relatively cheap property.

Bulgaria's beach and ski resorts are expanding quickly as a result. The main cities have shrugged off their weary Communist-era image and have become vibrant and attractive, with well-kept boulevards, varied shopping and lively nightlife.

Spectacular mountains occupy half the country's territory and the swathe of golden beaches along the 370km- (232-mile-) long Black Sea bring in hordes of tourists from around the world.

Visitors can stay in towns and villages that have aimed to preserve the authentic Bulgarian spirit and hospitality. Bulgaria is especially proud of its rich folklore traditions, and folk dances, music, national costumes and traditional rituals play an important part in the life of Bulgarians.

Bulgaria has had a turbulent history and recently experienced radical political changes. Having been a satellite of the Soviet Union for nearly half a century, Bulgaria chose its first democratically-elected president, Zhelyu Zhelev, in 1990. A constitution was adopted in 1991, the political parties were restored, and privatisation and restitution of the land started. Such changes escalated in the run-up, and subsequent accession, to the European Union in 2007.

=====================

Luxembourg is the richest country in the European Union and Ireland is second despite having much less gross domestic product per capita, while Bulgaria is the poorest, the EU statistics office said.

According to Eurostat, in terms of purchasing power parity, GDP per citizen in Luxembourg last year was almost three times the EU average at 276 units.

The statistics show Ireland had GDP per capita at 146 units, making it second richest in the 27-nation bloc. The Netherlands was third richest in the EU with 131 units and Austria was fourth with 128.

Bulgaria, which joined the EU together with Romania last year, had the lowest GDP per capita at 38 units.

EU hopeful Turkey had 42 units, Eurostat also said.

  • @555gypsie You just said not to stereotype but you think just because some guy you assumed was "Polish" stole something from your car all Eastern Europeans in England are like that. Maybe you should try not to contradict yourself before attempting to make a point.

  • same with white eastern europeans coming to England looking for anything to nick i saw one polish guy so desperate he tried to steal my car radio ariel until my dog jumped him and he ran away there are white people just as bad dont sterotype

  • @555gypsie Look 'em up. Gypsies aren't immigrants, there illegal immigrants in Eastern European countries, who don't pay taxes or bills, and are associated with laziness, violence, and light brown skin color.

  • Bulgaria has problems, but its not this bad. Most of the people in the video are gypsies in the abandoned villages, maybe next time the video about Bulgaria can have actual Bulgarians in it. I'm pretty sure I can find similar pictures of the hobos here in America, so whoever made this video should try to help the relief and not be a pessimistic, lazy slob that just makes fun of his home country.

  • @xXSassygurl These gypsies did it to themselves. They are lazy and do NOT want to work; they beg; they steal from us; we, normal bulgarians have to work day and night just to feed them and they get benefits. They kill, rape, threaten us. Not to mention that they are racist.

  • @bulgariaplanet I feel sorry for you LOOSER.

  • @antidote2010 You love Bulgaria because of the cheap women !!! What other can you love in this country ?

  • @IboCino Ive met many rich greedy people in those eastern European countries the gap between rich and poor is in every country there are poeple over there with more money than us in the uk they need to sort out there own problems

  • @lambertovt you should of been born in England then you would think all gypsies were white from Ireland , so brainwashed you eastern Europeans and Russians, to think every dark skinned person is a gypsy and the English definition of a gypsies is one who travels far and what are all these white eastern Europeans and Russians doing travelling to England to make money so white eastern Europeans are gypsies too in the English person s mind same as Irish Gypsies that invaded England
