This video documents a Pile Driver in operation and up close.

A vertical two cycle diesel engine is an integral part of the pile driver. It is composed of a free floating piston which fits in a cylinder resting on the pile.
To start the engine, the crane operater lifts the piston and drops it. It falls into the cylinder where it compresses the air. Fuel oil is injected and is ignited by the heat of the compressed air. The explosion forces the piston up and drives the cylinder down where it pounds the pile. When the piston falls, the cycle is repeated.
