From Charlie "The Phantom" Singleton's first album "Modern Man" (Arista, 1985). Charlie wrote and produced the album, sang on all tracks and played all the instruments as well.
The original sleeve notes says everything about this multi-talent:
Through the first half of the '80s, Charlie Singleton was a key creative force within the tremendously successful group Cameo.. .as a songwriter, singer, arranger, and multiinstrumentalist. He came on board for 1980's "Knights of the Sound Table" LP, and his role in Cameo kept expanding through the albums "Alligator Woman", "Style", and "She's Strange". Such hits as "For You," "Alligator Woman," "Be Yourself" and 1984's #1 single, "She's Strange," all bear the stamp of Singleton's singular musical sensibility.
With "Modern Man", Charlie Singleton takes a long-planned step towards solo stardom. "Modern Man" is a concept he's been working on for years, a project that he took totally into his own hands. "The songs all lock together musically," he says, "and each one tells a story. You can picture what's going on."
When Charlie goes into the studio, he takes extensive and far-reaching experience with him. Beginning in junior high school, he started learning to play brass instruments, moved on to woodwinds and guitar by high school, earned a music scholarship to Southern University in Baton Rouge, and picked up violin, bass violin, classical piano and percussion (by his estimation, Charlie now plays 47 instruments).
He studied under noted New Orleans clarinet player Alvin Batiste, who first exposed him to jazz.
Charlie was the guitarist with Billy Cobham's group in the late '70s, and among the other artists he's had the opportunity to play with are Dizzy Gillespie (at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival), Marvin Gaye, Branford Marsalis, Cannonball Adderly, Bobby "Blue" Bland, John McLaughlin, King Floyd, and Jim Hall. He was playing with his own band, Stargazum, when Cameo spotted him and asked him to join the group.
"I always wanted to be a solo performer," Charlie says, "to be more of the focus." Around the time of "She's Strange", Singleton began recording on his own, going in and out of the studio between recording and touring with Cameo. His one-man LP, "Modern Man", clearly shows that he's more than ready to walk into the spotlight. The single, "Make Your Move On Me Baby," is just the first taste of what is one of the year's most impressive solo debuts.
